Filmed in Taipei with young dancers from the hip-hop, locking, popping, waacking, and breaking communities, Édith Roux’s video explores the intersection of memory, architecture, and movement. The film unfolds from right to left, evoking the visual rhythm of traditional Chinese scroll paintings.
The banyan tree, a species native to Taiwan, gradually envelops an old warehouse in Tainan dating from the British and later Japanese colonial periods. Through the proliferation of its aerial roots, it becomes a living metaphor for resilience and the persistence of nature over time.
Set against Taiwan’s historical monuments—Sun Yat-sen Memorial, Cui Heng Pagoda in Peace Park, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial, Liberty Square, Zhongshan Hall, the 228 Memorial, and the National Palace Museum—the dancers’ bodies act as mediators of a complex history, navigating between colonial legacy and contemporary urban life.
Belonging to a generation born in a democratic and globally connected Taiwan, the dancers reinvigorate these static sites with vital energy. Their choreographies articulate a movement of joyful resistance and renewal in the face of an uncertain future.
